Bridge

Sometimes, most times, I don’t look at you full in the face

Because I don’t want to see what I don’t want to see

Dark, searching, empty, needing, over your shoulder wanting

To be filled up overflowing with anything to fill the gap between now and then

For a moment, you give me hope with that laugh

You know it well, like the sound of a doorbell, like a ringtone

Not of your own but of someone who wants to come back in

I’m tricked by your lit eyes, the upturn of the left side of your mouth

By the smell of soap on your skin and the coffee on your breath

I will lay myself down, messy but still

The grains of concrete ironed into the side of my face

While you use me to get from here to there

As you search, empty, needing, over your shoulder wanting

To be filled up overflowing with anything to fill the gap between now and then

I will give you hope with that laugh

The one you got from me.
