Mileage Monday

Hey guys! So, each week, I add an extra exercise onto my strength stuff. So, I’ve been doing 100 push-ups for a while now, and then about a month or two ago I started doing bicep curls (3 sets of 10x15lb) and that felt really good! So I’ve added on some other exercises too. I do this stuff about 3 times per week. I do push-ups nearly every day, but the other stuff leaves my body too sore to do too much. I did 100 squats once, and could barely get out of bed the next day.

As for running, I went up to 57 miles again this week, which felt really good.

Monday– I had to do these miles on the treadmill because it’s crazy icy outside. I did 9 miles pretty easy (7:45 min/miles) and then did the last 2 miles at 6:40 min/mile pace.

Tuesday– I got up early and ran 7 miles on the treadmill before the first day of school got started!

Wednesday– Callum woke up earlier than I did today so I had to run on the treadmill while he played on my phone and in the garage beside me. I did a hill workout: I warmed up for 10 minutes, then every 2 minutes I increased the incline by 2% until I hit 12% and then went back down to 0% again. I cooled down for a bit and then ran the last 3 miles at 7:03 min/mile pace.

Thursday– Callum woke up at 6 but I got him some milk and he fell back asleep so I carefully tip-toed out of the room and downstairs to get ready to run. I managed 8 miles on the treadmill before he woke up for real for the day!

Friday– I had SUCH a good sleep last night. We went to bed at 10 and I slept straight through until 7. I think it’s because we moved Callum’s bed over away from our bed, so he actually stayed in his own bed all night. YASSSSS. Grandma Slane watched him for a couple of hours today and I snuck an 8 mile treadmill run in while she had him.

Saturday– I got to run OUTSIDE! FINALLY!!! I met Lora and we ran 8 miles together. It was so cold and so windy, but we did it.

Sunday– After I drove Jake to work, I layered on the clothes and headed out for a run but the sidewalks are just way too icy so I had to turn around and finish on the treadmill. I ran 6 miles at an 8 min/mile pace while listening to Lindsey Hein’s podcast.

I thought squats target the glutes but when I’m doing them, it feels all quads, but then the next morning I feel it all in my glutes. WHY?

How do you keep your phone from turning off in the cold?

Isn’t it crazy how after being stuck inside to run because of icy condutions, we will brave the cold and wind no matter how bad it is just so we can get outside!!??

It looks so cold today. Luckily it is rest day!

To answer your phone question… I leave mine inside!

I bring mine in case I slip and fall or something. I kept it close to my body in an inside pocket and that seemed to keep it from shutting off.

I tuck my spibelt, which holds my phone, into my tights. That keeps it warm. Today it shut off when I had the spi belt outside of my tights for about 10 minutes. It’s THAT cold.

      That’s ridic.

Great job on your running and getting it in, whether in the cold or on the treadmill. I like that you’re adding different strength exercises in each week, too. I could really stand to work on my upper body a bit…

Do it! I’m surprised at how fast my muscles showed up! My arms have always been spindly little things, but now they’re feeling strong. It’s amazing how that strength translates over to not just running, but the rest of life too, like carrying Callum, and even emotional strength (don’t laugh!). It’s seriously cool.

My phone is lagging so much. It needs to stop complaining. I love that the 100 pushups has evolved into so much more! I’m trying to bring it back for myself as well.

Well, I wouldn’t say it’s *so* much more, but it feels really good to be doing *some*thing else than just running all the time.

Your strength training is going so well! Im not sure about the squats. I feel them in both the quads and the glutes.
We got some snow yesterday and its been so cold today that Im sure the streets and sidewalks are really icy. Its supposed to warm up in a few days so I may need to wait until then to run outside again!

I hope it warms up quickly for you. It’s raining here now so the snow is slowly melting. THANK GOODNESS.

I wish I knew about how to keep my phone on. Someone said to keep it inside all of your layers (so it’s close to your body) but for me that just makes it uncomfortable. The only thing I can suggest is upgrading to a new iPhone…mine hasn’t shut off yet! (but my headphones stop working for some reason)

BTW you are CRAZY amazing for the 100 pushups. I can’t even fathom doing that.

I still have one more year with this phone; I don’t feel like shelling out more money for a new one. Callum uses it all the time and I guess he once drooled into the ear piece because I can’t hear people when I talk on the phone unless I use the headset or the speaker. Toddlers are a pain!

Awesome strength training! My guess would be that your quads are weaker than your glutes and therefore tiring more quickly? I am not sure. My quads are weaker than my glutes and always fatigue first. Like, just reading about 100 squats made my quads hurt. Or maybe that’s from snowboarding.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com January 8, 2017, 9:28 pm

I did 200 squats today! I can already feel it in my hip flexors. My wrists are hurting a bit too from all the pushups. I can sometimes take things a bit too far…

Way to go on the 100 pushups!! The other day Roger told me I had to do 30, and as hard as I rolled my eyes, I still had to do them. I hope the muscular arms will show up any day now!

I keep my phone in a running belt on the first layer of clothing, that keeps it warm enough to keep it from turning off…I think.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com January 9, 2017, 5:47 pm

I started at 30! I could only do 10, rest, 10, rest, 5, rest and 5. Now I can do them in groups of 20 until I get to 100! It’s only been since the summer, so the progress is quick if you stick to it! I know you can!

To keep your phone from turning off in the cold: stay inside where it’s warn. 🙂

When I do squats I feel it the next day in my inner thighs. Anyone else have this? Am I doing it wrong?

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com January 11, 2017, 11:17 am

No, you’re not doing it wrong. I feel it in my inner thighs too! I’m just surprised that I feel it in my glutes because during the actual exercise, my glutes don’t get tired; it’s only the day after that I feel it.
