Mileage Monday

Well, my mileage crept up to 60 miles this week, mostly because of my unexpected run with Lora on Saturday. I’m still loving my strength routine!

Monday– I ran 6 miles outside in the dark morning and then finished up on the treadmill with 2 miles at 6:40 min/mile pace. Also did strength stuff.

Tuesday– I was supposed to go outside but ended up back on the treadmill. I averaged 8 min/miles for the first 6 and then 7:13 min/miles for the last 3!

Wednesday– I took it to the gym for this one! First I tried the Rec Centre but the childminding was disgusting so we left and went to the gym next to where we live. Callum still cried a bit but they were great with him in there! I squeezed in 9 swift miles before I picked him up. Then I did my strength routine once we got home.

Thursday– I did 7 miles on the treadmill and then finished with 2 miles at 6:40 min/miles. Then I got diarrhea. So, even though I’m dying to run outside, it was probably a good thing that I was close to a potty.

Friday– I ran 6 hilly miles pushing Callum in the running stroller and then I did 3 7-min miles later on the treadmill! Also did strength stuff.

Saturday– SO GREAT! I had a few hours without Callum! THIS NEVER HAPPENS. So Katie and took off for Lora’s house so she could hang out with Lora’s kids while Lora and I went for a 10 mile run together. THERAPY IN THE BEST WAYS.

Sunday– I woke up at 5:45, drove Jake to work and then ran 6 easy miles in the dark! It felt really good to get this done early. Strength stuff after my shower. I had to warm up; I was FREEZING.

Any mamas out there ever struggle with finding a gym with good childcare? It’s brutal around here!

I wish you had better gym childcare near you! Maybe someone will give you a good tip. I believe the only place around here that has gym childcare is the YMCA. I don’t know how good it is though, of course!

I don’t even think we have a YMCA anywhere near here. Maybe in Vancouver? But that’s about it. Otherwise they’re all private gyms or ones run by the municipality.

Is the only reason you go to the gym for the childcare? Just wondering since you have a treadmill and it sounds like you do you strength stuff at home. Thats really frustrating that its tough to find somewhere good!

Yes, that’s the only reason I’d go to the gym. It’s better than Callum staring at a screen while I run or falling asleep in the stroller and screwing up bedtime. Plus it gives him a chance to play with cool toys he doesn’t have here and to interact with other kids. I’m going to be on the hunt for a good place!

My gym has childcare, although I am child-free the kids there seem to really love it. I hope that if I ever have kids they will take to the gym childcare and be okay in there so I can work out. I was a member of a gym once that was very fancy and had a cafe inside, and ladies would drop their kids in the childcare and instead of working out, have lunch together. Also they were supposed to stay inside the building but would go out on runs… and I don’t really blame them to do either thing. You mamas need that child-free time too!

Looks like a great week of workouts. I did some treadmilling myself this week and you are right about being close to a toilet… sometimes that is an added bonus of a treadmill.

I never even thought about leaving the gym to run outside! Although what if something happened and they couldn’t get a hold of me? That would be terrible!!

i used to go to the Y and the childcare was great. Now that my youngest is 8 I don’t need it anymore (yay!) There was a 3 mile loop outside the Y that we used to run- I would carry my cell phone and that way if they ever needed to call me (they didn’t) I would never be that far away. I’m pretty sure technically we were supposed to stay inside the building but no one ever said anything. Also, I knew a mom who was so exhausted that sometimes she would drop her kids off in the childcare, find an empty room and take a nap! Ha ha. Luckily I was never quite THAT exhausted.

^ I think it was like this, they had the parents’ cell phones and they would call them on it in the gym, I guess, if the kid needed to leave childcare or needed the parent. In the years I was a member I never heard them make an announcement on the PA. So I guess someone could leave and run outside, as long as they could get back so the staff didn’t know they were out of the gym?

Every time I walked by the childcare windows, it looked like the children were having so much fun. They had classes for them as well with parachutes, zumba, etc. So the kids exercised too, not just planted in front of a TV.

Yup, we definitely need something like that here. I haven’t been on the hunt too much yet. I should start asking around soon.

That story about the exhausted mom gave me the giggles. Now THAT is tired. Aww. Poor mama.

Oh my gosh, I remember those days..when I could finally head out for a run whenever I wanted, it was so freeing!!!

Whenever Andrew’s mom watches Callum for me while I run, I take out off out of here like a bat out of hell. Ponytail streaming behind me.

Something that I am a bit worried about is WORKING at a gym without a daycare…

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com January 22, 2017, 6:44 pm

Oh… because then you’d have to drop your little muffin off at daycare first? SHITTY. I just think it would be such a cool sitch if we worked at a gym with kickass childcare. We could work out, get paid, have a break from our cute little screamers but having them within arm’s reach all day long if need be. DREAM JOB. Except I don’t like gyms. They smell.

  • Laura @ This Runner's Recipes January 22, 2017, 5:31 pm

One of the gyms I belonged to back in Indiana didn’t have any childcare and all I could think is, really? Personal trainers, fitness classes, tvs on the machines, but nothing for moms (or dads) who just want to do something for their physical and mental health? I hope you can find a good gym!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com January 22, 2017, 6:42 pm

ZERO? They had zero childcare?!?! Whoa okay that’s just not nice at all. I can’t deny that I haven’t started brainstorming my own way to start up a gym with childcare. I have a treadmill and a spin bike–I could charge mamas $10 per hour in a pinch if they need to get a workout in. Except, I’m not a huge fan of kids (I only like my own) so I’d probably just plunk them in front of a screen. But still, I’d keep them alive for an hour, and that’s something! I could make millions!

How does Callum do with staying at the child watch place? My son likes playing with the new toys, but when he was little, he hated going to the child watch at my zumba studio.

My gym does have childwatch, but I have never taken my son there. I run/ work out when he is with his dad. if have to run on other days, Roger keeps an eye on him.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com January 23, 2017, 2:19 pm

Honestly? Callum hates it. He cries. And cries and cries and cries. I feel too guilty dropping him off but I swear if I found a gym that had decent toys and a decent area for him to run around in, he’d be happier! I wish I could find something like that!

    Child free hours are magical.
