Mileage Monday

Hills, hills, hills. That was the theme for this week’s mileage. What a shock to the legs though, wowzers! I’ve never once done hill repeats only because I get enough hill work just by heading out the door to run around here, but because our winter has been so gross, I’ve been stuck on the treadmill for so long and the hills, along with my quad strength, faded into the background. It was time to climb.

I was also able to run a few miles with Andrew this week too, which made me so happy! My weekly mileage was a bit too high (64 miles) but I feel like they were a good balance of tough and easy. I kept up with my strength work which feels really good too.

Monday– At 6am I did 6 miles super slow around the icy neighborhood and then since Callum isn’t feeling well, he had an afternoon nap so I hopped on the treadmill and did 4 miles with 3 of them at 6:40 pace. It felt easy. I wonder if I should be doing more miles at this pace? Maybe I’ll try 4 next week.

Tuesday– Seven stroller miles down and then up a giant ass hill. OOOF.

Wednesday– I slept in again and so I had to run while Callum was awake. I pushed him in the stroller down and up that stupid hill again (ABSOLUTE KILLER) for 6 miles. And then Andrew told me he wanted to run tonight so I joined him after I put Callum to bed. He did great! We ran 4 miles together in the dark.

Thursday– I procrastinated and procrastinated and procrastinated because again, I slept in and again, I had to push Callum in the stroller down and up that mountain again (the flatter route is under major construction). That hill kicks. my. ass. Which is good, I guess because I’ve lost a lot of leg strength from being stuck on the treadmill for so long. I added in some squats and push-ups later on and then went with Andrew on his 4 mile run after Callum went to bed.

Friday– Last night was HORRIBLE. We are trying to get Callum to sleep in his own bed and he protested from 11pm until 2:45am. He nor I slept a wink during those hours. I napped him for an hour and a half this afternoon and ran 6 miles outside (Andrew was at home) and it was a pretty brutal run. Super slow, heavy limbs, tired everything.

Saturday– I got to run outside! In the middle of the day! Without the stroller! I took off and ended up clocking the middle 7 out of 10 miles at a 7:03 min/mile pace! No idea where that came from, and now I feel like I’m getting sick; I’ve got the chills and a sore throat.

Sunday– I woke up feeling a bit better but super tired from dealing with an unruly toddler all night. I ran 6 miles this morning pushing Callum in the stroller and then another 4 this afternoon with Andrew while Kylah babysat Callum! Time for El Nopal!

Are you guys lacking on the hills lately because of too many treadmill miles?

Anyone else out there battling a virus?

    Hills, you say? We have none of them around here…except for the garbage dump hill where I ran today.

    I have the opposite deal- I can only do hill running on the treadmill because it’s flat here, but on Sunday I went to the treadmill since it was raining really bad and I ran a hill interval sequence that was killer! We do have a bridge to train on but it’s a 25-30 minute drive for me so the gym and treadmill are much easier.

      I’ve only done hill work on the treadmill once. ONCE! That was last week, or the week before, I think because it had been so many days in a row of just straight treadmill running. It was tough AF!

    I wrote about hills in my post too! We have alot of hills around here and since I only run outside I cant really avoid them. But during the week I usually just do laps around my neighborhood where its less hilly. Climbing big hills is tough but definitely a great workout!

      I’ve got a flatter route that I like to do around here especially when I’m stuck with the stroller but it’s under major construction right now. So, hills it is! Ooof.

    I ran a lot of hills this week also! I do use the bike paths for flat running but most of my runs are on rolling hills with some good climbs. I find hill climbs on the treadmill are the best way for me to not go stir crazy on the mill.

    We have no hills, so my flat little run was enough. And then I ran on teh TM today and tweaked my hamstring, because I am that awesome.

    You are so strong on that stroller!! that is the secret to your speed, right? the stroller!

    Not lacking on hills here, Roger suggested that I did hill training the other day, and I just looked at him and said “NO!” and showed him the elevation from our last run. We did a trail run yesterday, and there were some massive hills on that!

    I hope you are feeling better, send smoke signal if you need me to send you some spicy Cheetos.

      Ana, the secret to my speed is a combination of: anger issues, anxiety and OCD. Ha ha ha! The stroller is tough af though. I’m sure it helps build strength in my arms and legs.

    I hope whatever is threatening you gets kicked to the curb. You weren’t kidding about sleeping a lot this past week! I am sure it’s your body trying to fight off whatever it is. I have not run hills in awhile because… I am unmotivated and lazy!

    I’m battling teething, not a virus or a toddler who won’t sleep in his own bed. How’s that going by the way?

    Ave has two little guys coming in and it’s making a mess of nighttime sleep. We’ve had worse though so for some reason I feel alright with it. Then again, ask me in two more weeks and my answer might be different.

      Last night was the first night that we only woke up once, and it’s been a week. GAH. Hopefully tonight will be ZERO wake-ups. Little stinkers.

    You’re such an inspiration… I mean, look at all the miles (and hills). I could definitely do better with the hills.
