Mileage Monday

Hey guys! Well, I’m dealing with a bit of a blip in my marathon training but hopefully I’ll be able to come back rested and ready to dive into the last quarter of this training cycle. I’ve had a cough since the beginning of January (along with everyone else!) but this past week it took a bit of a turn. I started feeling sicker instead of better, and I kept hurting my ribs with my deep, body-convulsing coughs. On Friday I went to the doctor and she confirmed that I have/had fluid in my lungs so she started me on some antibiotics. I’m feeling a lot better, although my ribs are still pretty sore but from talking with other people who have had pneumonia, I’m gathering that the rib soreness lasts quite a while.

I managed to log 64 miles this week, and now as I look back onto Tuesday’s workout, I can see why I couldn’t nail it! I’m looking forward to a complete recovery and being able to jump back into training once I’m better. Here’s how this last week went down:

Monday– Oh, just a 14 mile treadmill run to start my week. I’m looking forward to going to physio tomorrow morning. Hopefully Dave can fix my rib that I dislodged WHILE COUGHING.

Tuesday– Well, I tried to do a workout but it was a bit of a struggle. I got my rib fixed this morning at physio, and it’s still a bit sore but it should be better by tomorrow. I warmed up for half a mile and then ran 5 miles at 7:13 min/mile pace and then I attempted 3 miles at 6:22 pace but only made one mile at 6:22, jumped off the treadmill for a 10 second breather and then back on for another mile at 6:27, jumped off for 10 seconds and then back on for a half mile at 6:27. Boo. I jogged in the rest to make 9 miles total. I’ll get it next time.

Wednesday– A 7 mile treadmill run at 8:30 min/mile pace.

Thursday– Well, this is fun. I dislodged another rib coughing last night, this time on my right side. So after I got it put back in (at physio), I ran a slow 7 miles on the treadmill.

Friday– A short and bittersweet 7 mile run outside before I got diagnosed with pneumonia!

Saturday– A slow test of the lungs. I pushed Jesse in the stroller for a 6 mile walk/run while he napped. I brought my puffer and stayed close to the van.

Sunday– Feeling better but my ribs are still super sore. I stuck to the treadmill for this one: 14 miles at 8 min/mile pace. Hopefully my ribs will settle down and my health returns full force this next week! I’m staying positive!

    That sounds awful to keep dislocating your ribs like that! I don’t know how you ran that much while dealing with all that plus the coughing. I was sick in the beginning of the year and it seemed like after all my runs my cough would get so much worse. I hope you’re feeling better and can get back to your regular training!

      Even when I’m not sick, I end up coughing a lot after a really tough tempo or speed workout. The more people I talk to, the more I hear how common it is!

    Okay. I can’t decide if i’m in awe or kind of starting to hate you. First you ran 70 miles a week throughout your pregnancy, and now you ran 64 miles while being diagnosed with pneumonia! And that tempo run on Tuesday was nothing to scoff at, although you didn’t hit your exact paces. Actually you know we’re all rooting for you- hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and you’ll feel better soon. Thanks for being an inspiration as always.

      Awe, thanks Jenny! I’m such a weirdo, I know! I KNOW!!!! I’m not exactly sure why my body is able to do what it does. I’m just super grateful. I do my best with what I’ve got and that’s all we can really do.

    Just shaking my head over here because I can barely deal with hitting 30 miles in a week. You are amazing!!

    I hope you feel better though. I know that feeling and it’s the worst. Although I’ve always avoided the doctor (as you know I never go) so hopefully you heal up faster than I did!

      You had pneumonia!?!?!?! No way. Although it’s kinda ringing a bell. When did you have it? It’s BRUTAL! I’m lucky though–I think I caught it super early.

    OMG woman! Stop dislodging ribs like a boss! Jeez, that must be so painful. It sounds like you’re on the other side of it though so I hope you continue to heal and can ramp back up on the run.
    14 miles on the treadmill? Yikes. You are my hero!

    I had the flu over Christmas and walked away with rib pain from coughing myself… it took about 3 weeks for it to go away.
    I am amazed you were able to run at all.

      I feel so bad for you! I will forever empathize with people now who deal with a bad cough.

    I’d tell you to take a break, so long as you’re recovering from pneumonia and dislodged ribs, but I also know you wouldn’t listen. Love you.
