Pregnant and Running: 21 Week Update

I don’t really feel like I have much to update you guys on for this week, other than just to say that I had another 76 mile week last week and the baby and I seem to be handling it just fine! We had our ultrasound appointment this morning (which I’ll include in the 22 week update next week) and the baby is doing so well, and is so strong and man oh man, do I ever feel those kicks and jabs! It’s pretty cool.

I have so many ideas about different posts to write and while I made sure to voice record them while I was running on the treadmill, I still need to actually take the ideas and put them down into writing. I want to write a post on pregnancy essentials, newborn essentials, exercise during pregnancy myths, things like that. And not the usual bullshit either; I want to write the REAL STUFF. Like you guys know I will.

So, here’s a couple of this week’s stats, alright? I know a lot of people don’t like putting down weight gain, either for their own privacy reasons or for the sake of avoiding weight obsession and disordered eating/exercising, and I respect that. But I want to document weight gain because my focus is debunking the myth that high mileage and endurance exercise is unhealthy during pregnancy and to do this, I need to make sure that I back it up with sound evidence. Because really, come on. Imagine if I were hammering out 70+ mile weeks and I wasn’t telling you guys how much weight I was gaining. I know if I were you, I’d be a little skeptical, and probably assume that I wasn’t gaining enough just because of how much endurance exercise burns energy, right? So, it’s important to include that stuff, and it’s important that I include ALL of the dirty details because I am not interested in romanticizing anything, really, but especially not the concept of growing a baby.

So, I started at around 120lb and at 21 weeks pregnant I now weigh 131lb which brings me to a 1lb gain from last week. During the second trimester, we’re “supposed” to gain 1-2lb per week so I’m hitting those numbers despite high mileage running. One week I may gain 2lb, or even 3lb, and the next I may not gain any, but on average, my numbers are climbing and all is ship-shape.

If you’d like to read about last week’s running mileage, you can find it here.

If you’re new to my blog and you’d like to catch up on the rest of my week-by-week pregnancy summaries, head on over to this page.

Other than that, indigestion is definitely present, but my hemorrhoid issues have dwindled. We had the detailed ultrasound today, but you’ll have to wait until the 22 week update next week! And yes, we found out the sex! What do you guys think it is? I’m hoping for a kitten.

    I know it’s not a kitten and that it’s a girl.

You’ve got a 50% chance of being right! About the girl, not the kitten. 😛 I don’t care if it comes out as a flying purple people eater, as long as it’s not twins! I’d DIE if it was twins. Okay, I wouldn’t die. But anyone who’s had twins has ALL MY RESPECT.

Well I can’t think of anyone more prepared for twins than you!

Ha ha ha! Probably pretty true, actually.

I think girl! (But I am usually wrong.)

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com April 26, 2017, 7:11 am

      Verrrrrrrry interesting!!!

  • Susie @ Suzlyfe April 26, 2017, 3:54 am

I hope it is a sea otter. Your cat is already the size of 3 cats. (that sounds dirty)
I trust you. I will be interested in what you have to say to that girl–I think that you have a great perspective in that running and pregnancy can work together.

Amanda was so nice! It was a great conversation. I talked a lot and really fast–I hope I didn’t overwhelm her with information.

Tell me how your hemorrhoid issues have disappeared and you’re carrying a baby while mine just won’t leave me alone? Hmmmm….

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com April 26, 2017, 7:10 am

Remember how I talked about Proctofoam? I have Procto gel which is the same family, not as good, but still works great! Get some!

You are handling everything so well! I’m happy to hear everything’s still going well and both you and baby are still healthy. Keep it up mama! Can’t wait to find out what you’re having…also hoping for kitten or maybe a puppy. But I think it’ll be another boy 🙂

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com April 26, 2017, 7:09 am

Thank you Gretchen! Puppies are too much work, maybe even more work than a baby. I’m not even kidding! I love dogs but they’re too much work for me!

      • Gretchen April 27, 2017, 5:44 am

But they’re so cute! And don’t turn into brats!

I’m betting a girl or a puggle like Charlie. Either way, something adorable with big eyes! Then again, Callum is adorable with big eyes and he’s a boy.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com April 26, 2017, 10:36 am

Awe, I loooove Charlie. I’d be happy with a Charlie!

  • Allie Capo-Burdick April 26, 2017, 10:46 am

Please make it as real as possible and just tell your truth as you know it because you do it so well and we need it!!! You do amaze me with how much you can run but really it’s because your body is used to it – it’s healthy for you and the baby!!! Love it.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com April 26, 2017, 1:01 pm

Thanks for your support, Allie! I totally appreciate it.

  • Ana April 26, 2017, 1:48 pm

This baby is going to be born running! Way to keep up with your running! I’m in complete awe at your strength!

Keep doing what you are doing now, because you are amazing!

  • Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets April 29, 2017, 7:55 am

A pussy from the pussy, now that would be interesting. A medical miracle perhaps.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com April 29, 2017, 8:17 pm

HA HA HA! Omg. I believe!
