Pregnant and Running: 23 Week Update

Meat.

It sounds way more exciting than it is. I’ve never been much of a meat eater other than the occasional plate of hot wings, chicken strips with honey mustard sauce or a few bites of Andrew’s steak, so it’s weird for me to be craving so much meat right now. We went to El Nopal for dinner last night and I picked out all the shredded beef from my plate and ate it, leaving the cheese, guacamole, lettuce and tomatoes. I’m eating a tonne of eggs, cheese (mostly feta), cheeseburgers, bacon, and chicken strips.

My belly feels huuuuuge, but I know it’s not, and it’s not even close to how big it’s going to get in the next few months. No matter how many times I’ve done this gig, I still get shocked at just how rapidly my body changes! Phew.

I weigh 132lb now, 1lb up from last week, 9-12 lb total weight gain. I ran 70 miles last week and kept up my strength work, although a little tweak in my right hamstring set me back a day. It feels better now so I should be back at my hip, glute and hammy exercises by tomorrow. If you’re curious, my Mileage Monday post for my 23rd week of pregnancy is here.

As far as running comfortably goes, it still feels the same and in fact, sometimes I even forget I’m pregnant and come back to the van and get shocked by the reflection of my belly in the van window. I still definitely have to time my runs around bathroom visits, for sure, and hydration and fueling can be a bit tricky. And I get the sensation to pee with each step, 100% of the time. I have to say that the one thing I’m looking forward to is being able to run carefree again without spending a good chunk of my mental energy on not peeing my pants. Although, my pelvic floor gets a doozy of a workout each time I go for a run, so that can be nothing but beneficial for mommy and daddy’s “romantic time.”

    I don’t eat chicken strips, sorry. But I do eat honey mustard sauce… on everything. I especially like it on sweet potato fries, but really… I eat it on everything. I get the Bolthouse Farms yogurt honey mustard dressing and it’s so good and lower cal/fat than the regular sauce (not that I’m really counting but when you eat a sauce on everything those calories kinda add up). I love that you’re still running and hooray for only a minor setback and day off so far!

      Ooooh I’ll have to try that sauce! I loooove dip. I always say that I’d dip dip into dip if I could.

    If I eat chicken strips I dip them in ketchup. Glad you are still running and feeling pretty good!

    I dip chicken strips into all the things. Honey Mustard, BBQ, ketchup, mustard, chipotle mayo… I don’t dip them into honey though. That is a Southern thing, and my bro did that. I went through a stage of dipping them into sweet and sour sauce, but I’m over that.

      I had to think long and hard about the honey thing. I had never heard of that but I can definitely see how that could be a thing! I don’t like sweet and sour sauce at ALL. Yuck yuck yuck.

    You are just glowing. I’m so glad running is feeling so good for you! I read an article about how Gwen Jorgensen, the Olympic medalist triathlete, is running more in pregnancy because it feels so good and it made me think of you (in a good way).
    I do Pilates which has some pelvic floor exercises. They help with pelvic and low back pain that I can get from endo.

    I ate more meat when I was pregnant which still isn’t a lot but definitely more than I was used to. I also wanted all the fried foods. Mmmm, I’m salivating just thinking about it.

    oh my stars i couldn’t NOT comment on this because ‘meat’ is the main thing i ate during my pregnancy with Lulu. the first and second trimester i ate pretty much nothing but short ribs with a few grapefruits and tons of fat. then i went through a strange chicken wing phase and then ended with a strange vegan pizza thing. anyhow, cravings and pregnancy are so fascinating!
    i ran very slowly and loved it but the pee thing caused me to stop by month 7.5. i also taught spin classes throughout and managed to stay with that till right before the baby but seriously the pee thing….. i have to pee again just thinking about it.
    you look gorgeous! so happy for you and your growing clan.

      Uhhmmm… I haven’t eaten ribs this whole entire pregnancy and this needs to be remedied immediately. It actually feels like an emergency.

    oh and i like ranch and blue cheese dressing as dipping sauce! if i’m really drunk i like gravy. luckily that’s been a while 😀
