Pregnant and Running: 27 Week Update

When I’m in the mood to run, it’s easy to just coast through it like a little fairy, feathery and light with not a care in the world. But when I’m riding the struggle bus, when I’m tired and lethargic, or when I’ve got a tough workout on tap like maybe a tempo run or some mile repeats, I get through it by dividing the run into sections. I might chop it up geographically (from the coffee shop to the bend in the road, then from the bend of the road to the start of the trail, the duration of the trail, then from the end of the trail back to the coffee shop). Or I might run until the end of the podcast, then run for the duration of my speed work playlist. However I do it, it is almost always mentally easier for me to divide the tough run up into manageable sections.

Pregnancy is like that tough run. Whoever thought to divide the 40 weeks into trimesters was probably a runner. I’m currently in the last week of the second trimester and I know all too well that the third trimester is tricky AF. Shit is about to go DOWN. In my case, probably literally.

My 25th week of running was filled with mileage, speed work, and impressive tempo splits. My 26th week was an 80 mile week which pretty much blows my mind. And then there’s the 27th week (here is the link to my mileage Monday). No more speed, no more tempo, just an ass-dragging week of running because I can, and because I know it’s probably not going to last. I had some heel pain creep up toward the end of the week as well as an increase in Braxton Hicks. I also found out that I’m anemic so I started up on some iron supplements which, if you guys don’t know, can cause some plumbing problems.

And the weight gain, ohhhhh the weight gain. Tagging on 10lb is doable, you know? Nothing to write home about. I mean, Christmas, Thanksgiving, we’ve all been there where we partook in a little too much gravy and pie and felt a little sluggish for a few weeks after the last car pulled out of the driveway. But now that I’m clocking a solid 15lb extra, let’s just say that mama’s starting to feel it. I don’t even know if 15lb is really necessary at this point because it feels like a little much but I really wanted to keep running and weight gain is something that everyone is able to point to, you know? If I’m not gaining enough then I lose my green light. So, I guess it’s necessary and it’s only helping my gigantic baby boy so I’ll go with it. But man, does it ever feel like I brought too much back from vacation.

Here I am at 27 weeks pregnant weighing in at 134.5lb (up half a pound from last week and a total of 14.5lb from the start):

Oh–another thing that I’ve been feeling even more of lately is the numb leg/foot sensation while I’m running. It still doesn’t hurt at all, which is such a gift, but it definitely feels mildly annoying! It’s caused by some compression on my sciatic nerve, probably from the loosening of my hips from the pregnancy hormone relaxin. My left leg starts to feel like it’s made of wood and then my left foot goes completely numb, not unlike the feeling you get when you’ve been sitting on it funny and then try to get up and walk on it.

This is getting long, but one more thing: I started adding Nuun tablets to my water bottles just to make sure I’m getting enough electrolytes during the super sweaty hot and humid days. Every little bit helps.

Do you guys divide up your tough runs into sections? How? With what?

Have you ever dealt with a numb or “sleeping” body part? Hearts don’t count. 😉

    I used to split up my long runs in smaller sections. Now my runs are so short I don’t really need to do that, but sometimes I’ll plan out when I will take walking breaks. I cant imaging running while your cant feel your foot?? I had some nerve issues when I was dealing with piriforms/SI joint issues but it was just in my hip and hamstring, not down to my foot. I know what you mean about the area feeling like its asleep though- so strange!

      It’s a REALLY weird feeling, but I’m careful to not let it change up my gait or anything. I just kinda keep the momentum going.

    I don’t divide up my runs. I just go. But I’m not carrying a bowling ball aka baby in my belly either.

      Well, maybe not actually dividing up your runs–I should have been more clear. I mean like, mentally dividing them up. Some people think of the first 20 miles of a marathon as the first “half” and then the last 6 miles are the actual race. Or some people don’t allow themselves to listen to music until they hit the halfway point. Mental tricks like that.

    You look so great and I have to agree about breaking up pregnancy into trimesters was probably a runner’s idea! Now, because of that I will dare not say “you’re almost there” but you are past the halfway mark and that much closer to meeting your new little man :-))))) It’s all excitement from here on out…

      I’m so glad that I have my babies early, ALTHOUGH… you never know! So I really should not bank on it. That would be even worse, to expect him early and then have him come late. CAN YOU IMAGINE?!?!

    Definitely divide up any long run (or speed work) into sections. If I focus on the whole number it scares me and would make me not want to do it at all! I’m guessing pregnancy feels the same way…like a reallllllllllllly long run!

      TOTALLY! I ran my ultra after I had 3 kids, and man oh man the mental toughness required for that ultra absolutely came straight from my uterus.

    You look so great! I divide up my runs mentally if it’s a really long run or speedwork. Workouts like mile repeats I have to take one interval at a time. My foot falls asleep like that a lot, but that’s because I sit on my feet while I work.

      YES to the one interval at a time thing! When I used to do those long tempo runs (10-12 miles) I’d have to focus on the mile I was in or else I’d rage-quit.

    On the rare occasion I do run, I absolutely divide it up into sections: get one lap around the block, get to the end of the block, get to the driveway. It helps.

    I think you’re doing fantastic. Lots of greens and beans for the iron, the latter which might help with iron related bowel issues.

      I had to stretch our ground beef for tacos and so I used lentils. You’d be so proud of me!

    Alien arm syndrome. When you sleep with your arm above your head and it falls asleep, then you wake up to feel “someone” touching your face and you don’t realize that it’s you, so you freak out.

    Then you feel kind of stupid when you figure out that it’s your own hand, and because your arm is asleep, you can’t move it, so you have to pick it up with your other hand and then grit your teeth as the blood rushes back in and the pins and needles start.
