Week in Review

It’s Freddy’s 15th birthday today! Fifteen years and one day ago, after I got out of the bathtub and beached myself onto our bed, I felt yet another Braxton Hicks contraction and heard a faint “pop” sound. Jason was at a friend’s house playing poker, and my due date wasn’t for another couple of weeks so this all came as a bit of a surprise. We had just moved into our newly built house and hadn’t yet had our blinds put in so as I tore through the house naked, my waters pooling around my feet with each step, the whole neighborhood was able to watch a National Geographic documentary without paying for the subscription. Freddy was born 3 hours later weighing 8lb 7oz. He was the quietest, cuddliest baby of all of my kids. He’s got a gentle disposition but a strong will, and a cheeky sense of humour.

It was a short week last week (for the kids, which means long for the parents) but we managed to squeeze quite a bit into those four days. Friday was a Professional Development Day and so because today is a holiday, the kids had a four-day long weekend.

The weather has been decent so we spent as much time as we could outdoors. Katie and I brought Callum to the park and at one point we looked over at him and he had his knickers down and was going pee in the grass. Thankfully nobody else saw him.

Katie’s school had their track meet on Wednesday and we’re so glad that it didn’t rain. I hated track meets when I was a kid but I always ran the 100m and 400m because nobody else wanted to. At our middle school, everyone is required to participate in at least 3 events. Katie did the 100m (because it’s over the quickest and she hates running), shot-put and discus. There was a parent volunteer at the end of the 100m race who held her hand out to collect Katie’s sticker but Katie didn’t know what she wanted so she gave her a high five. We had such a good laugh about that! You had to see it.

Callum had his first swimming lesson. He got super clingy with me and wouldn’t go in the water so next week I have to wear my bathing suit and go in with him. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. He looks all happy here but things changed pretty quick once he realized I wasn’t going in the water with him.

On Friday, Freddy and I dropped Katie and Callum off at my parent’s house and then I took him shopping for his birthday. It was SO NICE to be able to have one-on-one time with him! We literally never EVER get to be together without anyone else around so I was so thankful to my mom and dad and Katie for taking care of Callum while we spent a couple of hours together. <3

Andrew took Callum for me for a couple of hours on Saturday and I ran a super slow 12 miler in the sunshine. Then we bought a cute little bistro set for our back patio and sat out there for a while and ordered in Indian food for dinner. We dropped Callum off to Andrew’s parents on Sunday afternoon and Andrew and I headed out into the heat for a run together. It was a cooker! Then we got showered and ready and went out to Fort Langley for dinner at the Fort Pub. No photos, no proof, so you’ll just have to believe me.

Even though it’s Monday, it still feels like it’s the weekend because it’s Victoria Day here today!

Thanks to Meghan from Clean Eats Fast Feets for hosting yet another Week in Review!

Did you take swimming lessons when you were a kid?

Did you participate in track meets? Were you forced to or did you like it? Which events?

Happy birthday to Freddie again! I remember when my water broke. Such a weird experience and feeling. My son did take swim lessons- I think I was more afraid than he was at the time lol

  • Meredith @ the cookie chrunicles May 22, 2017, 3:33 pm

I totally just spelled Freddy wrong. All day I’m spelling things wrong!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 22, 2017, 7:27 pm

Oh, don’t worry about it! Yeah, not many people get to experience their water breaking. It was only with Freddy that I had that happen and it was so cool!

I was on the track team because it was “recommended” that we did a spring sport if we were on the field hockey team. I ran the 400 and 400 relay mostly, and hated it. My coaches said I was good at it but I think it was just because no one else was really good at that distance. Somehow I convinced them to let me be a thrower senior year…I was terrible at that too!
    Happy birthday to Freddy!!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 22, 2017, 7:25 pm

I’d way rather do 400 than 100. GAH. And I bet you WERE good at it!

Happy birthday Freddy! I took swim lessons as a kid and (surprise) they always ended in a nasty sunburn. I still can’t swim properly.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 22, 2017, 7:24 pm

I’ve never taken real swimming lessons but we always had a pool in our backyard so I learned how to stay alive, but that’s it. Zero form.

Remember swimming lessons in Gr. 10 or 11 (?) with Mr. Yewchuk? What sadistic asshole thought it was a good idea to send all 50 of us to stand around awkwardly in our bathing suits, listening to one of our most detested teachers drone on about swimming? Seriously, that damaged my self image so severely, I don’t know if I’m still over it.

I was in track in elementary school and like Katie, I only did 100m and 4 x 100m relay. I’m a terrible swimmer and runner. If you see me running, that means something is chasing me and you should start running, too.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 22, 2017, 7:23 pm

Damn. Mr. Yewchuk was brutal. I have a lot of bad memories with that guy. I remember Stephanie getting into a huge fight with him in swimming class. I can’t remember exactly what it was about? But I recall it being really bad. I hated bathing suits because I have a super long torso and no boobs (back then) so I’d be constantly tugging at the neckline, pulling the bottom part up my backside. Lame.

I love Freddy’s sticker badge dedicated to Walter White :-))))) Instant love. Happy Birthday to him and would you ever have imagined you would be pregnant on his 15th birthday? You are amazing mama!!!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 7:53 am

Your comment made me think! I’m trying to go back into my own head back then to see how shocked I’d be about being pregnant on Freddy’s 15th birthday. I like to think that somehow on a deeper subconscious level that I’d know back then. I dunno. Maybe not. But super interesting to think about!

  • Susie @ Suzlyfe May 23, 2017, 4:07 am

So I remember my swimming lessons! I have a little mental shot of being in the pool when I was 3 at the place. I loved swimming when I was a kid. Now I get pretty cold in water, but when I stop being so shifty it is great fun.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 7:52 am

Oh I totally forgot about the being cold part. I HATE BEING COLD. I could never be a swimmer.

  • Gretchen May 23, 2017, 4:22 am

I’m trying to picture looking at my neighbor’s house and seeing a naked pregnant woman in labor….I think it would scar me for life lol!! Love that story though and I hope your next birth goes more smoothly for that. No poker for Andrew until you give birth 🙂 I always loved track meets in elementary school, and I remember going to the gym teacher and asking to run the 800m because I started running with my dad over the summer and I didn’t want to do a sprint, and he told me I wouldnt be good at the longer distance and made me do a shorter race. I was so crushed!!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 7:51 am

I’ve given birth so many times I think I could probably just do it alone at home on the couch. Push him out and then finish up the laundry.

Your gym teacher is a dick! He should never have squashed your desire to run a specific distance. You should go find him and tell him you run marathons now.

  • Megan @ Meg Go Run May 23, 2017, 6:08 am

So does every kid in the school have to participate or just people that sign up for track? I would have hated to be forced to play a sport! Growing up, I quit every sport I started within a week lol.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 7:50 am

Every single kid has to participate. Isn’t that so dumb? It wasn’t like that when I was a kid. I still did track but I didn’t like it. I was too anxious to be singled out like that.

  • Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets May 23, 2017, 6:35 am

    Happy Birthday Freddy!!

This sounds like a pretty great weekend: a little indecent exposure, some alone time with Freddy, a different kind of alone time for you and Andrew and Katie’s track meet. The only blip was the swimming lesson which reminds me I need to look into signing Ave up for some soon. I’m sending the Hubby with her. 🙂

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 7:49 am

Andrew offered to take him but I really thought it was going to be okay! DAMMIT.

  • Amy Lauren May 23, 2017, 6:44 am

I didn’t do track as a kid. We didn’t have it (small town). We had it in middle/high school but I didn’t do it then either because I’m crazy unathletic and all I can do now is run, haha. I did take swimming lessons but really, all I can do is dog paddle now!

Happy birthday to Freddy! 15 is an awesome birthday, hehe. It sounds like a busy week in general for you guys with all the activities, too.

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 7:48 am

Every week is a busy week. SIGH……… And it starts all over again today. I have SO. MUCH. TO. DO.

  • San May 23, 2017, 2:59 pm

I don’t even know what “track meets” are… but I did some running in school (we had to!). When do you think Katie will start liking to run? 😉

All caught up with your blog… phew. I can’t go away for too long… my Feedly reader is exploding!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 4:43 pm

Track meet actually sounds like a weird term now that I think about it! It sounds much more chill than it is in real life. Track meets should be called Track Wars.

  • molly rose May 23, 2017, 4:55 pm

love that Freddy ran for Walter White!! I named my mini schnauzer Walter after him 🙂

I took swim lessons as a kid but don’t remember them. what I DO remember are my little brothers swim lessons where they would literally just throw him in the pool to make him learn how to hold his breath!! hilarious. but also traumatic

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 23, 2017, 5:10 pm

Oh, I’ve heard a lot of people “learn” to swim that way. Good lord.

I tried watching Breaking Bad but couldn’t get into it. I have a really tough time getting into ANY TV show, actually. Andrew and I are watching Shameless together but even that is touch and go.

I named my pet after alcohol.

  • Ana May 25, 2017, 11:35 am

The swimming instructor is going to let you into the pool with Callum? where my kid went, we were allowed to be nearby for the first lesson, and in another room for the rest of the lessons. They told us that we would make the kids nervous!

I don’t know how to swim! but still hope to learn.

    Happy Belated birthday to Freddy!

    • suzy.suzyheather@gmail.com May 25, 2017, 6:25 pm

Hmm… next time I’m going to sign him up for swimming lessons where YOU live!
